Toru, the stainless-steel appliance series designed by Nendo for Alessi, is a wonderful expression of the skill and care with which the company handles this material. “Toru” means “through” in Japanese and is a subtle reference to the black, tube-like elements that
characterise the various objects in the collection. These elements fit elegantly into the stainless-steel body, acting sometimes as a spout, sometimes as a handle, to create a composition of cleverly ironic volumes.
The Toru juicer demonstrates the Nendo studio’s ability to transform abstract concepts into tangible shapes, resulting in objects that exude effortless elegance and uncompromising functionality.
The juicer consists of two sophisticated, minimalist parts: a stainless-steel body and a transparent lid. In Japanese, “toru” means “through”, and with this juicer, the collection’s distinguishing feature – a black element that appears to pass through the body of
the objects – seems to pierce the lid, become its handles, and protrude from the steel body to act as a spout.
This object is complicated to produce because the linear design requires a particularly challenging manufacturing process.
Juicer made of polished 18/10 stainless steel and black thermoplastic resin, consisting of a lid, a juicing cone, a strainer insert, a container with a spout made of thermoplastic resin, and a motor housing, in the base of which the cable can be wound up.
