Designed by Man Ray in 1920, this distinctive chess set transforms traditional chess pieces into pure geometric forms, including the cube, sphere, pyramid and cone. The Knight introduces an unexpected sculptural element inspired by the scroll of a violin.
Man Ray’s chess design was inspired by his lifelong friendship with fellow artist and avid chess player Marcel Duchamp. This licensed re-edition is produced by IC Design in collaboration with the Man Ray Trust.
The complete set includes the Man Ray chess pieces and coordinating chess board. The 32 pieces are crafted from solid beech wood with clear lacquered and black painted finishes and wool felt pads. The board is veneered wood with clear lacquered and black painted finishes and a wool felt bottom.
